Rigging in the Spiegeltent Colombino at the Edinburgh Fringe 2015

As always, you can click on any of the photos in this post to enlarge.

I can't quite believe we're already well into September! August seems to have flown by so fast this year.

I had a few different jobs rigging during the Edinburgh Fringe this year, but the main one was Le Haggis, a night of burlesque, cabaret, music, song, acrobatics and bawdiness, performed inside the Spiegeltent Colombino in Assembly George Square Gardens. The show featured several aerial artists (aerial fabrics, Chinese pole, straps and hoop) with multiple rigging changes during each performance. It was great fun to be a part of, with 26 performances over the course of the month. I had some awesome experiences and met some fantastic people I will hopefully get the opportunity to work with again in the future. It was also brilliant to get some experience of the unique challenges involved in rigging inside a spiegeltent.

We got some great reviews, including: five stars from Broadway Baby; four stars from Scotsgay Magazine; four stars from WOW247; a great review from This is Cabaret; and we were even listed in Time Out's top 5 circus acts at the Edinburgh Fringe!

Also in the Spiegeltent Colombino, I got the opportunity to work with the wonderful The Ricochet Project rigging a corde lisse for Best of the Fest Daytime as a one off event. Their show, Smoke and Mirrors, was a very different style of performance to Le Haggis, so working with them to have a 10 minute showcase of their piece was a nice contrast. I also got the chance to see their show during the Fringe at Assembly Roxy, and can highly recommend seeking them out if they are touring anywhere near you in the future.

Finally in the spiegeltent, I also got the chance to rig for Best of Burlesque on one night when Empress Stah (who also performed in Le Haggis) was a guest performer on the show with a hoop routine. Unfortunately I didn't get any photos from the show, but it was a great night and the show got a four star review in Edinburgh Festivals Magazine from a reviewer who was in that evening.

It was fantastic to finally be in Edinburgh and able to work this year, and I met a lot of awesome people doing it. Hopefully it will lead to even more interesting and exciting opportunities further down the line!

Le Haggis

I am incredibly excited to announce that I will be working as a rigger on cabaret show Le Haggis by Electric Theatre Workshop at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. We will be performing in the Assembly George Square Spiegeltent Colombino, an incredibly beautiful venue.

Show description from the Edinburgh Fringe website: "Scotland’s sexiest cabaret and circus show is jam-packed with international artists and the hottest local talent like you've never seen them before. Set to a contemporary Scottish soundtrack performed by the finest pop-folk troubadours around. See the Spiegeltent in all its glittering glory for one of the steamiest shows on the Fringe."

A few small jobs in May and June

As always, you can click on any of the photos in this post to enlarge them.

I've had quite a few smaller jobs during the last month or so, so I thought I'd compile them together in one blog post with a few photos of what I've been up to.

First of all, in May we had the very exciting news that Full Cirqle would be opening in Portobello as Scotland's first dedicated centre for circus arts. It's a great centre which is really starting to get going this summer, and includes an aerial barn which I've been involved with some of the rigging for, including rigging static lines for harness classes by All or Nothing ADT and putting in paging points to keep kit out of the way while it's not being used.

I also went to the Pleasance Theatre one morning in June to put up some aerial fabrics for the MGA Academy of Performing Arts end of year dance production, E-Fuse.

Finally for this post, I also went to the site in Perthshire for the annual Enchanted Forest sound and light show to have a look at potential plans for the All or Nothing ADT aerial performances there as part of this year's show, which runs throughout the month of October. There are lots of exciting ideas and plans afoot, so keep checking back to find out more.

It's already shaping up to be a very exciting summer and autumn with plenty of projects in the pipeline, including rigging for a new show called In Her Shadows for their Scottish tour in September and October. It's great to be so busy and have so many different opportunities to develop further my rigging skills and experience in Scotland, and I look forward to adding more posts about them all over the next few months!

Three's a Crowd Promo Video

Promo filmed and edited by Alex Choudhary at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

Three's a Crowd at the Dundee Rep Theatre

We had a one-off performance of Three's a Crowd by All or Nothing ADT at the Dundee Rep Theatre last Saturday evening. Despite the fact that we had just the one day to do the get in, rehearsals, the performance itself and the derig, the show went really smoothly and was very well received by the audience. In particular, it was a pleasure to work with the venue's technical team, who were very proactive, efficient and knowledgeable in helping us put on the show. I took a few photos during the set up and the technical rehearsal, which you can view below, and as always you can click on any of the pictures in this post to enlarge them (apologies for the poor quality, they were taken on a mobile phone with no flash).

First Aid at Height

In March, I attended a course in London on First Aid at Height run by Total Access. It was really useful and interesting for me to refresh the more basic aspects of emergency first aid in the workplace, including CPR, from a working at height perspective, but also to cover some of the specific accidents and injuries which we are more likely to encounter when working at height, such as spinal injuries and harness-related symptoms such as those related to suspension syncope.

I'm really pleased that I took part in this course, and found the course content to be very useful in giving me confidence that if I should ever need to provide first aid while I'm working I would be able to do so. The trainer was very knowledgeable and helpful regarding the particularities of first aid requirements for working at height, and all in all it was a very productive and useful day.

Three's a Crowd: Newport, Cumbernauld and Greenock

I can't quite believe that we've already come to the end of the first main chunk of the tour for Three's a Crowd by All or Nothing Aerial Dance Theatre. It really does feel as though the last six months or so have flown by!

Since my last post, we've had shows at the Riverfront Theatre in Newport in Wales, Cumbernauld Theatre and the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock. I took a few photos in Cumbernauld and Greenock, but surprisingly none in Newport. As always, you can click on any of the photos below to enlarge therm:

We have just two more shows left on the tour: Dundee Rep Theatre on 9 May 2015 and the Western Baths in Glasgow as part of the Cottier Chamber Project on 22 June 2015. If you've not come to see the show yet, please do come along for these final two performances of the tour.

Three's a Crowd Tour Dates

As I posted about a couple of times in December last year, I'm working on a show with All or Nothing Aerial Dance Theatre called Three's a Crowd, which opens at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh on 31 January 2015, and you can book tickets for that show online here. We will then be going on tour over a number of dates across spring, mostly in Scotland but also down in Wales for one show in March. You can see where we will be and when on the flyer for the show below. It's a brilliant production, so I definitely encourage you to go and see it if you can! You can click on the flyer below to enlarge it.
